Can We Trust the Gospels?

Posted by Steve on May 19, 2006 in Doctrine, Theological Musings | 0 comments

Why ask the question? Consider the following quotes…

“The New Testament is based on fabrications” (p341).
“The greatest story ever told is, in fact, the greatest story ever sold” (p267).
“The Bible is a product of man, my dear. Not of God. The Bible did not magically fall from the clouds. Man created it as a historical record of tumultuous times, and it has evolved through countless translations, additions, and revisions. History has never had a definitive version of the book” (p231).

These are just some of the quotes from “The DaVinci Code” that make accusations attacking the credibility, reliability, historicity and truth of the Bible in general and the Gospels in particular. While much is being made about the claims of “The DaVinci Code”, I believe that they should be addressed for two reasons. First, with the release of the movie today, the reach of Dan Brown’s message will be quite extensive. Second, even apart from “The DaVinci Code”, the church in each generation must seek to reaffirm orthodox Christianity and its teaching, in this case with reference to our understanding of Scripture. So again I ask, can we trust the Gospels? (more…)

Semi-Pelagian Narrower Catechism

Posted by Steve on May 17, 2006 in Doctrine, Humor | 0 comments

Ok, you may or may not get why this is so funny, but I promise you it is!

From another blogger who got it from PuritanBoard…

The Semi-Pelagian Narrower Catechism
1. Q: What is the chief end of each individual Christian?
A: Each individual Christian’s chief end is to get saved. This is the first and great commandment.

2. Q: And what is the second great commandment?
A: The second, which is like unto it, is to get as many others saved as he can. (more…)

True Objectivity

Posted by Steve on May 16, 2006 in Doctrine, Theological Musings | 0 comments

True objectivity is…

just is not possible!  And this is precisely the danger of a statement like “theology should never drive the interpretation of a passage”.  A statement like this presupposes that true objectivity is possible; that is, that it is possible to completely remove ourselves as readers from the document that we read.

But we can’t.  When you open the Scriptures to read them, you bring with you everything you know, everything you believe, everything you have ever done and everything you have ever thought or felt.  Note the words of J. Severino Croatto in his book, “Exodus: A Hermeneutic of Freedom”, Exegesis is eisegesis, and anybody who claims to be doing only the former is, wittingly or unwittingly, engaged in ideological subterfuge”.

Consider an example…
You just had a big bacon and egg breakfast and then open your Bible to read John 6:48 when Jesus says, “I am the bread of life”.  You will interpret that passage differently than the starving man in Africa who just gave the last piece of bread to his children as he clings to the promise that Jesus would be his nourishment.

All this to say, we as the readers of Scripture are not empty slates waiting for the Bible to just “have its way with us”.  Rather, we approach Scripture out of the context of everything that we are.  Instead of saying that our theology should not inform our interpretation of a text, we need to honestly articulate our presuppositions.  Then we can approach Scripture not as empty slates to be filled, but as humble servants of the text.  We come as dialogue partners with Scripture, but as in a dialogue between a subordinate and his superior.  Scripture is the authority and we must submit to it.

Therefore, since pure objectivity is not possible, it is better to know HOW you are being subjective when you come to the text.  Articulate your presuppositions (that is, you theology, your emotions, etc) that are influencing your interpretation, then humbly submit those presuppositions to the powerful change agent that is the Word of God.

Mosaic Authorship of Genesis

Posted by Steve on May 14, 2006 in Doctrine | 0 comments

A while back, a friend was asking about authorship of Genesis. Was Genesis written by Moses? I provided a short answer at the time, but I thought I would further develop the idea presently.

Did Moses write Genesis? Yes! What evidence is there of this?
